Brace yourselves, horror fans—Thor Moreno’s latest feature, VOODUN, is taking the festival circuit by storm! The

supernatural thriller has already nabbed Best Picture awards at both the Dublin and Melbourne Film Festivals, solidifying

its place as a must-watch for 2025. With its spring release around the corner, VOODUN is poised to terrify audiences worldwide.

Set in the gritty streets of a small Midwestern city, VOODUN follows Detective Brett O’Shea (Eric Guilmette) as a routine missing person case plunges him into a nightmare of supernatural terror. The deeper O’Shea digs, the darker the truth

becomes: a serial killer wielding powers rooted in voodoo has been stalking the shadows, and reality itself is starting to bend.

Moreno, celebrated for his intense storytelling in films like Schism and When Jack Came Back, set out to create something truly unforgettable. “The great horror films of the seventies and eighties felt like you were right there in the

scene with the actors,” Moreno says. “We wanted VOODUN to have that same immersive, raw feel.”

And immersive it is. Shot on vintage lenses and set against the sweltering August heat of Iowa, the film oozes atmosphere and authenticity. The production wasn’t just physically demanding—it was emotionally intense, something Moreno

believes was key to the film’s impact. “Everyone was tired and miserable,” he admits, “but that only added to the raw energy we needed to pull this off.”

The early acclaim speaks for itself. Winning Best Picture at the Dublin and Melbourne Film Festivals, VOODUN has been celebrated for its ability to blend crime, horror, and the supernatural into a seamless, heart-pounding narrative. The film

also tackles voodoo with respect for its cultural depth, drawing from meticulous research and the rich detail of Jan Walters’s novel Hazzard Avenue. “It was fascinating to learn the difference between Voodoo and Vodou,” Moreno shares.

“This story is mostly fiction, but we wanted to bring the cultural elements to life in a way that felt authentic.”

As anticipation builds for VOODUN’s spring 2025 release, it’s clear that Moreno has delivered something special—a film that terrifies, immerses, and lingers. Whether you’re a fan of classic 70s horror or looking for a modern escape, VOODUN is the kind of movie that reminds us why we love being scared in the first place.
